Description

Challenge

JetBrains needs a consistent process for publishing relevant content, responding to its developer community, and turning audience feedback into future content ideas.

Before content goes live, it needs to be checked against current social media priorities, the editorial calendar, and publishing standards. Community questions require verified information, clear ownership, and coordination between social media, product, marketing, and support teams.

This project connects these activities into a practical workflow: from checking and publishing content to finding the right answers, following up with users, and identifying topics worth covering next.

Project goal

Design, document, and pilot a workflow for content publishing, community responses, and audience-informed content ideation across JetBrains’ priority social media channels.

You will establish the resources, internal connections, and working processes needed to support this workflow. During the pilot, you will check and schedule approved content, manage eligible community interactions, coordinate answers with relevant teams, and propose content topics based on audience insights.

By the end of the internship, JetBrains will have a tested playbook, a verified response library, clear routing and follow-up processes, and a content idea bank with a repeatable approach to maintaining it.

What you will work on

1. Understand the current process

Review the editorial calendar, publishing workflow, and real comments, mentions, and direct messages to identify:

  • How social media priorities translate into the publishing schedule.

  • How content is checked, approved, scheduled, and verified after publication.

  • Common audience questions and how they are currently answered.

  • Where missing information, unclear ownership, or handoffs cause delays.

  • Which internal teams and existing resources can support community responses.

  • How community insights currently reach the people planning content.

Map the existing workflow and establish a baseline for the pilot.

2. Build the community response process

Work with the Social Media Manager and relevant product, marketing, and support colleagues to establish how different types of audience questions should be handled.

You will:

  • Group recurring questions and define which can be answered directly, require expert input, or need to be transferred to support.

  • Identify the relevant contacts and agree on practical ways to request information, route questions, and follow up.

  • Gather existing documentation, identify gaps, and coordinate the creation or verification of missing answers.

  • Create a response library with approved wording, source references, and guidance on when each answer applies.

  • Document the path from an incoming question to resolution, including ownership, handoffs, and returning to the user with an answer.

  • Define escalation rules for sensitive or potentially high-risk conversations.

  • Propose how answers and contact information should be reviewed and kept up to date.

The resulting process should make it clear who handles each type of interaction, where reliable information lives, and what happens when an answer is not immediately available.

3. Design the publishing workflow

Develop a checklist and working process for the final publishing stage, covering:

  • Alignment with current social media priorities, campaign timing, channel purpose, and the editorial calendar.

  • Checks for copy, assets, links, tags, formats, accessibility, and calls to action.

  • Scheduling in Sprout Social, including cadence, topic balance, and potential conflicts.

  • Verification that posts go live correctly.

  • Reporting and resolving publishing issues.

Define when you can proceed independently and when a mismatch or issue needs review by the Social Media Manager.

4. Build a community-informed content idea bank

Create a repeatable approach for turning direct experience with the audience into actionable content suggestions.

Your approach should define:

  • What to capture: Recurring questions, misconceptions, developer challenges, emerging interests, and relevant community conversations.

  • How to record ideas: The audience insight, supporting examples, proposed topic or angle, relevant channel, and connection to JetBrains’ priorities.

  • How to prioritize: Audience relevance, supporting evidence, timeliness, and fit with the editorial agenda.

  • How to maintain the bank: A regular cadence for adding, reviewing, updating, and retiring ideas.

  • How ideas enter content planning: A review process with the social media team, clear statuses, and feedback on selected suggestions.

Populate the bank with initial proposals and refine the approach during the pilot.

5. Run a live pilot

Test the workflow on an agreed set of channels during a defined period. You will:

  • Check approved content for publishing quality and alignment with the current agenda.

  • Flag outdated information, scheduling conflicts, or content that needs further review.

  • Schedule posts, verify live publications, and help resolve publishing issues.

  • Monitor comments, mentions, and direct messages.

  • Answer eligible questions using verified information and the JetBrains tone of voice.

  • Request input from internal experts, route support questions, and follow up with users.

  • Escalate sensitive conversations through the agreed process.

  • Identify opportunities for useful, supportive, or playful engagement in relevant developer conversations.

  • Propose content topics based on community insights and maintain the idea bank.

Review real cases with your mentor and participating colleagues. Document gaps and revise the process based on what you learn.

6. Evaluate and hand over the results

Compare the pilot with the baseline and assess the effectiveness of publishing checks, community responses, internal handoffs, and the flow of audience insights into content planning.

Present your findings and recommend how the workflow should continue after the internship, including ownership of the response library, internal contact map, and idea bank.

Finalize the materials and test whether another team member can use them without relying on undocumented knowledge.

Project phases

At the start of the internship, you and your mentor will agree on priority channels, pilot duration, milestones, and evaluation criteria.

  1. Discovery and baseline: Analyze publishing and community interactions, map existing resources, and identify relevant internal stakeholders.

  2. Workflow development: Agree on response and routing processes, develop documentation and publishing checks, and set up the idea bank.

  3. Live pilot: Run the agreed activities, test internal handoffs, collect evidence, and refine the workflow.

  4. Evaluation and handover: Present results, finalize the materials, and recommend ongoing ownership.

The project is complete when the pilot has been evaluated and the tested workflow and supporting resources have been handed over to the team.

Deliverables

  • Workflow analysis: Current processes, bottlenecks, opportunities, and baseline findings.

  • Community response playbook: Response guidance, question categories, routing rules, escalation criteria, and follow-up procedures.

  • Verified response library: Reusable answers, source references, and a process for keeping information current.

  • Internal contact and support map: Relevant teams, agreed contact routes, and responsibilities at each handoff.

  • Publishing workflow and checklist: Editorial alignment checks, scheduling guidance, and live-post verification.

  • Proactive engagement guidelines: Criteria for identifying relevant conversations and contributing appropriate responses.

  • Content idea bank and maintenance process: Audience-informed proposals, prioritization criteria, review cadence, and a route into editorial planning.

  • Pilot evaluation: Results, community insights, lessons learned, and recommendations for ongoing use.

Success measures

You will agree on realistic targets with your mentor after the discovery phase. Evaluation will consider:

  • Reliability and timeliness of publishing against the agreed calendar.

  • Effectiveness of checks in identifying publishing errors and conflicts with current priorities.

  • Coverage of eligible community interactions and response time during agreed monitoring hours.

  • Accuracy and usefulness of responses, assessed through reviewed samples.

  • Whether questions reach the right people and users receive appropriate follow-up.

  • Coverage of recurring questions in the verified response library.

  • Quality of proactive engagement and the conversations it generates.

  • Relevance of content suggestions and use of the idea bank in editorial discussions.

  • Whether the documented workflow is practical for the team to continue using.

Mentorship and ownership

The Social Media Marketing Lead and Senior Social Media Marketing Manager will be your dedicated mentors, providing regular one-on-one check-ins, feedback, and support in connecting with relevant colleagues.

You will own the project research, workflow proposals, documentation, and evaluation. During the pilot, you will take responsibility for agreed publishing and community activities and contribute content recommendations based on your experience with the audience.

You will work independently within agreed guidelines. The social media team retains ownership of strategy, editorial priorities, final content approvals, campaign planning, creative direction, and crisis management.

Requirements

Who we’re looking for

You’re curious about developers, interested in what matters to them, and excited to make communication between JetBrains and its community more direct, helpful, and human.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Fluent English, especially in writing. You can communicate clearly and naturally, adapt your tone to the conversation, and avoid overly corporate language.

  • A technical foundation. You may be studying computer science, learning to code, building personal projects, or contributing to technical communities. You don’t need to be an experienced developer, but you should understand the basics of software development and be eager to learn more.

  • A strong desire to engage with developers. You enjoy asking questions, listening, joining conversations, and understanding different perspectives.

  • A natural feel for social media. You feel at home on X, Reddit, or LinkedIn and understand how people communicate, what sparks a conversation, and how brands can participate naturally. Familiarity with Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook is also welcome. You don’t need to know every platform equally well; we prioritize a strong understanding of one or more of the first three.

  • Good communication judgment. You can distinguish between a moment for humor, a question that needs a practical answer, and a situation where you should involve a colleague.

  • Curiosity about audience needs. You notice recurring questions and interesting discussions and can turn those observations into relevant content ideas.

  • Attention to detail and follow-through. You’re comfortable checking content before publication, keeping information organized, and making sure questions don’t get lost between teams.

  • Initiative and a collaborative mindset. You’re willing to reach out to colleagues, find reliable answers, propose improvements, and act on feedback.

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with JetBrains products or other developer tools.

  • Experience participating in online developer communities, student groups, or open-source projects.

  • Experience creating content or managing social media for a personal project, club, or community.
